I'm a fan of crates. Sooner or later, you are going to need one, and it is great if the dog is already used to it.

When my dog was a pup, she was crated overnight. Now she can sleep on her bed in my room, but she still uses the crate sometimes. When I am out, the petsitters always tell me they found her in her crate. When we travel to other people's homes, she uses her crate. Her crate is her 'safe place' no matter where we may be or she may be.

So I think it's a good idea to have one, and to have the dog be used to it as it's safe spot no matter what else is going on. Do I think all dogs need to sleep in one all the time? No. But they do all need to be acclimated to a crate, and sleeping in it is one sure way to get there.

And funnily enough, you will see many dogs who do not have crates recreate one for themselves. They'll settle in a small protected space anyway in many cases.

If you do have them sleep in a crate, put dog beds in there or a pad or some comfy pillows and blankets. Having them in a crate may let you sleep easier because they won't be roaming the house and possibly getting into something they shouldn't. They will bond to you better, however, if they sleep in the same room as you. It certainly doesn't have to be on the bed, it can be on the floor in a dog bed or in a crate in your room.

I like to have dogs sleep in crates because then they are comfortable when traveling (in their crates) and happy to sleep in any hotel room or family home (in their crates). Also, if anything should happen in the middle of the night you’ll always know where each dog is and getting them out of harm’s way will be simpler.

I too am a fan of crates, as an invaluable tool. I am, however, not in favour of a crate becoming the place a dog lives, for long period of time! My hounds have always slept in their crates at night. However, they have other beds for use during the day, unless we are going out, when some have to be crated!

Crates are very helpful for dealing with a number of dog problems. If you can get your dog to accept it (try treats), you might find more uses in the future. Some dogs come to prefer them, as it simulates the cave their distant ancestors used to live in. You might want to take it away after awhile, but I've got an old dog who likes hers so much, she still uses it a lot - almost always with the door open - and she's very much a senior.
